What is the speech roadmap and how do I use it with families?
Every speech sound follows the same path: sound discrimination, sound, syllable, double syllable, word, sentence, conversation. Start where the child is accurate, work up until the soft ceiling shows, and aim for the SEA: smooth, effortless, automatic. Families practice one level at a time.

What are the seven steps of the speech roadmap?
- Sound discrimination
- Sound
- Syllable
- Double syllable, which is the foundation
- Word
- Sentence
- Conversation
All speech sounds follow this same path, so one handout covers every target.
Where should home practice start?
Start by checking whether the child can say the sound accurately on its own, in isolation. If yes, start there. If not, that is session work for you before it becomes homework.
Then use diagnostic therapy: begin at the start of the roadmap and work up until the soft ceiling appears. That shows you exactly what the child can and cannot do yet.
What is the end goal of the roadmap?
The sound happens automatically in conversation. We call that the SEA: smooth, effortless, automatic. Every level below conversation exists to get the child there with as many correct repetitions as possible.
Quick answers
- Do all speech sounds use the same roadmap?
- Yes. Every speech sound follows the same seven steps, from sound discrimination to conversation.
- What if the child cannot say the sound on its own yet?
- That child needs your session work first. Homework starts once the sound is accurate in isolation.
